In Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, my mind turns two ways: The first half is guns, gunpowder, and gymnastics. Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) contend with the salvation of civilization mostly through athletics, aided by director Guy Ritchie's considerable skill with the camera and graphics.

But in the second half, when the duo moves swiftly but intellectually to confront the arch-villain Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris), my mind is at equilibrium, renewing my love of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original brainy, eccentric sleuth. The chess game is a marvel of strategy, replete with revenge, intrigue, and just plain ingenuity. Director Guy Ritchie's visuals include delightful Downey disguises and lively speed ramping in a forest bombarded by bullets. Hans Zimmer's music leans heavily on the fiddle to lighten the load of a difficult plot.
Watson's marriage, rather than taking away from the bromance, adds unexpected color and creativity. So Ritchie has ramped up the intellectual content and at least balanced it with the athletic, which was a strength of his 2009 version, Sherlock Holmes. With Inspector Lestrade just a memory and Holmes's love, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), appearing briefly, we are left to enjoy not so much the interaction of Holmes and Watson but the explosiveness of Holmes and Moriarty.

After the first half of explosions, the second half satisfies traditionalists like me for the chess game of life and death—and that's the suspenseful fate of the world in those pieces. Director Guy Ritchie has improved on his 2009 version.
One of my favorite fictional characters. Yes im a brotha who likes the Sherlock Holmes series. More so with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law though. Kind of weird that they would use Benedict for the same part which is why Iron Man and Doctor Strange had a beef at first in the Avengers Infinity War movie lol. Can't wait for the 3rd edition for come out man gonna be dope foreal. I'm 30 years old so i can appreciate a gentleman's swag in modern form. Chicks dig it when you not only look good, but sound articulate too.
As someone whom is way more than a Sherlock Holmes aficionado (I have read all 4 novels and all 56 short stories by Doyle), all I can say is Downey was exceptional; Ritchie’s directing was spot on; and Jude Law makes a superb Watson.

That said, the true question is does it compare to BBC’s modernized Sherlock? In my opinion, they’re incomparable. The tv series provides room for characters to evolve, and they do. Plus, it takes place in modern London. Although his portrayal is so uniquely peculiar, I’d say Cumberbatch’s performance is as good and maybe even slightly better than Downey’s, but one must take into account that Downey had to craft a British accent which was a natural dialect for Cumberbatch. The BBC Ms. Hudson was perfectly cast and well-played, another dimensional development to the TV series. But I believe I prefer Jude Law as Watson to Martin Freeman. Loved them both. Kudos to Ritchie.
Conclusively, as a movie, the Ritchie direction was incredible and Downey’s action Sherlock Holmes is riveting.
